A high-tech grocery distribution center for Walmart is opening in Wellford, a short driving distance from Spartanburg. This will result in a need to hire up to 200 more people for the center.

The facility spans 725,000 square feet and will distribute perishable items such as flowers, dairy, produce, and frozen goods to over 100 Walmart stores in the area. James Bright, general manager of the facility, said that because of this, the distribution center will play a critical role in the supply chain of Walmart.
He added that it is almost completely automated such that the roles that need to be filled are based more on problem solving as the strenuous factory jobs have been removed by automation. Most of the jobs are focused on technology and include automation equipment operators and maintenance technicians.
Bright said these jobs will be on the front line of employee roles, explaining these jobs are very competitive and some require prior knowledge. He added that maintenance jobs require passing a maintenance aptitude test, but people can be trained for most other jobs. Wages for associates who are hourly and work full-time start at $19.90 per hour and can go as high as $34.20 an hour based on shift, position, and schedule.
