With voters having approved a $295m referendum in District 5 of Spartanburg County, the Spartanburg County School District has announced that there are now seven projects in its plan to build new schools and expand others.
Banner printing is often employed at such sites to keep the community informed of such projects.
Superintendent of District 5, Dr. Randall Gary, said that the referendum passed without a tax or mileage increase. He said this will make it possible to increase the number of schools from 12 to 14, with two new elementary schools and two new middle schools. Intermediate schools currently accommodating fifth and sixth graders will be converted to an elementary and middle school.
Gary said that Byrnes High School will see the addition of 40 classrooms. This will be followed by additional work, which will create almost an entirely new school.
Construction on Tyger River Elementary School is currently underway. This school will house students in grades kindergarten through five. It will feature collaborative learning spaces for students and teachers and state-of-the-art technology.
Gary said there has been considerable growth in the area as industries are moving to Spartanburg with the subsequent development of new housing and residential spaces. As a result, projects like this are needed to keep up with the growth.
All projects except the high school are expected to be completed by the 2024-2025 school year.
