Next gen postal vehicles to be made in Spartanburg

Spartanburg will be the home of the manufacturing of between 50,000 and 100,000 new vehicles over the next seven years for the United States Postal Service. Spartanburg was selected by Oshkosh Defense for its efforts to build the Next Generation Delivery Vehicle.

Paul Brazeau, vice president for business unit operations of Oshkosh Defense Spartanburg Assembly, said that over 500 people will be working on these fleet vehicles. The vehicles will have larger doors, object detection sensors, and 360-degree cameras. They will also be a combination of fuel-efficient low-emission internal combustion engine and zero-emission battery electric vehicles.

He added that the mission of his company is to provide products and capabilities for people who depend on the company to build and protect communities around the world such that this project firs into the business model of the company. Brazeau commented that these new vehicles will improve the efficiency and safety of postal workers. He added that the United States Postal Service has already accepted delivery of these vehicles and that employees have already started their training on their usage.

The plant in Spartanburg will be expanding to handle the production of these vehicles and is expected to add 1,000 jobs in the fall.
