Oshkosh Defense, a subsidiary of Oshkosh Corp., located in Wisconsin will be building a plant in Spartanburg that will manufacture the next generation of vehicles for the United States Postal Service.
The company will be in the Flatwood Industrial Park and will be building battery electric vehicles with zero emissions and internal combustion engine vehicles that are fuel efficient and have low emissions. The plant will create 1,000 jobs in the county. Many of such jobs often require business card printing services.
An existing warehouse will be reconfigured. In addition, it is expected that other suppliers for the new plant will be relocating to the area.
The Postal Service has contracted for 50,000 to 165,000 vehicles to be purchased over a period of 10 years. This is the first purchase of such a scale from the Postal Service in 30 years.
Oshkosh was founded in 1917 and manufactures military vehicles used in combat such as ambush-protected, mine-resistant, and other such tactical vehicles. President of Oshkosh Defense, John Bryant, said that Spartanburg has a workforce that is known for its abilities in advanced automotive manufacturing. He added that many companies that make systems and parts for automotive vehicles have a plant in the county, including BMW.
The summer of 2023 is when production of these vehicles is expected to begin.
