City leaders from Spartanburg were recently invited to tour a new private school in the city’s Northside.

The Franklin School is geared for children as young as six weeks to three years old to have a safe and trusting preschool environment, said Shawna Bynum, Director of the school.

There are observation rooms for personnel from the school, parents, and students from the University of South Carolina Upstate, who will also have a room at the school for learning about early childhood education.

It is hoped by city officials that children from all socioeconomic backgrounds will be able to attend the school. Full tuition will be paid for by some parents, while other students will be transferring from the Early Head Start and Head Start programs.

Junie White, Mayor of Spartanburg, commented that this school will help to improve the Northside of the city, while Chris Story, City Manager, added that during the planning phase of the Northside a few years ago, city officials realized the need for such a school in the area.

Story said he knows of no other school like The Franklin School in South Carolina, which is expected to open next Monday, January 7.
