Navy veteran to open brewery near Spartanburg

Shawn Waggoner, a resident of Spartanburg County and veteran of the United States Navy, recently purchased what was once the Abbott Farms store in Boiling Springs to open a brewery.

After he left the Navy, Waggoner worked for IBM for seven years and then jointly owned a West Palm Beach brewery. Once his daughter graduated from high school, he decided to move to Spartanburg County, being familiar with the Mighty Moo Festival in Cowpens which celebrates the commissioning of that guided missile cruiser.

The brewery will be called ‘Plankowner Brewing’ in keeping with a Navy theme as that term represents an original crew member at a ship’s commissioning. The space is 6,500 square feet in size and Waggoner plans to renovate it and install his brewing equipment.

Plankowner Brewing will be a seven-barrel brew house, brewing 1,500 to 2,500 barrels in the first year. Once it has reached full production, he expects to produce 600,000 beers per year.

Customers will also be able to relax and play pool in a separate tap room and get some food from the kitchen, which will serve the basics such as salads and sandwiches.
