National awards program selects top two volunteers in South Carolina

Now in its 17th year, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a program that is run across the United States that honors young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism, presented honors earlier this month to youth volunteers from Iva, Columbia and Spartanburg, South Carolina. The top two youth volunteers, Helen Clay, age 16, and Anthony Frederick, 13, rose close to a combined total of $50,000 and were involved in other significant charitable activities. They used printing services to Print Flyers and Posters about their activities in their local communities so that the public would be made aware of their causes and contribute to them as well.

A junior in high school, Helen raised $28,000 to make and give more than 1,000 teddy bears to hospitalized children through the organization she founded in 2009. Helen decided that bringing comfort and hope to hospitalized children would be her cause after she was diagnosed with cancer and during her recuperation period was given a gift of toys from a boy who had been hospitalized and recovered from a difficult illness. Helen said that receiving his gift gave her great courage as she laid in her bed at the hospital.

An eighth-grader at a middle school, Anthony raised more than $19,000 for cancer research by selling lemonade. Anthony said his motivation was his mother’s hospitalization for breast cancer and her courage during her recovery. He also formed the "Kids Inspired by Cancer Kampaign" (KICK), to help senior citizens and homeless people.

Helen and Anthony will each receive $1,000, a silver medallion and a trip to Washington, D.C. in early May where the top two honorees from all 50 states and the District of Columbia will be involved in national recognition events that will be held over a course of several days.
