A planetarium is planned for downtown Spartanburg to be located next to the library and across the street from the new city council government complex.
Todd Stephens, Spartanburg County Librarian, said that the planetarium will be three stories high and will span 10,000 square feet. It will have a 45-foot dome that will be able to seat about 130 people. He said the plan is to bring something to the city that people usually travel to other places to enjoy. He added that it will have a great economic impact given the retail, dining, and other amenities in the area.
The cost will be between $8m and $10m. Stephens said that private donations have been raised in the amount of $3m towards the project, with another $5m to come from a re-issuance of bonds from the Inman Public Library project. Banner printing is often used at such sites to inform the public of upcoming projects.
Manning Lynch, Chairman of the Spartanburg City Council, said that this will be a great asset to the county. Lynch expressed excitement about what this structure will do for the entrance to the downtown corridor, adding that it will transform the block with the city-county complex across the street.
Work is expected to begin on the project by the end of the year.
