What's Happening in Spartanburg, SC…

Grocery store now opened in Spartanburg

Piggly Wiggly is now opened in the south side of Spartanburg becoming the first neighborhood grocery store in that area. The store is in what was once the Sav-A-Lot on S. Church Street.

The Piggly Wiggly has eliminated the neighborhood as a food desert, which is an urban area where it is difficult to buy quality or affordable fresh food. In addition, according to the United State Department of Agriculture, food deserts are occupied by many low-income families.

Mayor Jerome Rice said now the south side has a significant amenity. He added that it is important that the store be made welcoming and kept clean so residents in the area can take advantage of the store. He added that the store is “top of the line” and includes a fully functioning kitchen and a pharmacy. Such stores can turn to local print shops to create weekly flyers with details about special food items and discounts.

Former mayor James Talley said the store will have a tremendous impact on the area as it will reduce travel time and provide the products needed by the residents in the area.

Mitch Kennedy, Assistant City Manager, said that Piggly Wiggly was able to add between 30 and 40 new jobs in the area. The Communications and Marketing Manager for Spartanburg, Christopher George, added that this store demonstrates how businesses are looking to invest in the future of the south side.
