The Hub-City Co-op is coming to downtown Spartanburg, and there has been a commitment of $10,000 from the Spartanburg Downtown Association, which includes about 175 businesses, to purchase stock in a food co-op grocery; the first one of its kind in the state.
The co-op will be in a building on Liberty Street in the downtown area, and will require a total of $2.7m in order to be refurbished and fully operational. The pledge by the Association is in response to an earlier pledge of a challenge grant of $350,000 made by the Spartanburg City Council. The residents of the city are most likely being made aware of his challenge through poster printing.
Fundraising and planning for this co-op have been taking place over the past few years and organizers say that shares are still for sale. Director of the downtown association, Kathy Chandler, said that as a result of the co-op, there will be an increase in jobs and footfall in the downtown.
The president of the Board of Hub City Co-op, Tim Meade, has commented that there will be primarily natural, locally produced goods, and that the co-op will be available to the general public. There will also be a deli with soups and sandwiches for lunch that can be taken out or eaten in the market.
