Thanks to the work of the Spartanburg County Foundation and the Leadership Spartanburg Class of 2016 from the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce, ground was recently broken on a community garden.
The garden is located in downtown Spartanburg between the Nautilus Fitness Center and A Arrangement Florist. The Hub City Farmers’ Market will manage the site.
According to president and CEO of The Spartanburg County Foundation, Troy Hanna, the garden is designed to teach locals about healthy eating so as to promote good nutrition and wellness in the community. Nutritious foods will be produced by the garden, but it will also be an educational opportunity on healthier lifestyles.
According to Leadership Project Lead and Development Manager with Spartanburg company Johnson Development Associates, Martin Huff, this garden will be a place for all types of people, regardless of where they live or their income level, to have access to a garden in the downtown area. Residents will plant, cultivate, and harvest the garden. They will rent their plots and, hopefully, share ideas and recipes, which might be printed in Brochures and other documents that can be distributed throughout the community.
Executive Director of the Hub City Farmers Market, Caroline Sexton, added that the Market hopes that the garden will enable a diverse group of residents in downtown Spartanburg to come together to learn about healthy food options and gardening in a community setting.
