Dean recently released his third album, Magnolia Sage, representing not only a furtherance of the style he has already fleshed out in previous projects, but an evolution of his sound overall.
With his signature storytelling approach, Dean overhauled his typical creative process by way of working within a more concise timeline to make room for touring and nurturing his burgeoning career.
As Dean explained in a recent interview,
“You have your whole entire life to make your first record, six months to do record two, and then hardly any time to do record three.”
Thus, the album was formed in Dean’s head while he was actively on the road touring, piecing together different concepts while hopping from one time zone to the next. The broad-reaching geography of the album’s formation is reflected in the content.
The album is broken up into roughly two halves, with the first part designated as “Magnolia” and the second part being “Sage,” representing geographical and mental shifts that occurred during its formation.
