Festival celebrates historic treaty with Japan

The 22nd annual Black Ships Festival is taking place this July for three days.

The festival celebrates the signing of the Treaty of Kanagawa in 1854 by Commodore Matthew C. Perry.

The festival is presented by the Japan – America Society and the Black Ships Festival of RI. Two of the most popular activities will no doubt be the Sushi Saki Sail, which takes place on two different days, and the Taiko drums concert. Tickets for this are $30 in advance or $35 at the gate.

The Festival Gala will be held on Saturday at Marble House. Guests will enjoy a bar, dancing, sake, and a sit-down dinner; tickets are $150 each.

There will be plenty of other activities taking place over the three days, including a samurai sword workshop, demonstrations on sword techniques, a Japanese tea ceremony, and martial arts exhibits. Children's activities will include kite- and toy-making workshops.

People from all over the area, including nearby Middletown, will want to take the short trip to visit this festival. To advertise, organizers may invest in poster printing services.

The Black Ships Festival will be held at Touro Park from July 17 to 19. The Festival Gala takes place on July 18, beginning at 6:30 PM. The Taiko drums concert will take place on July 19; tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children. Call 401-846-2720 to find out more information.
