An activity that allows everyone to be a friend to birds is scheduled for Pittsburgh and other communities all over the world, helping locals do their bit for ornithological research.
The annual Christmas Bird Count is a project undertaken by the Audubon Society, and a hike has been planned to help the public take part. The participants will use field guides as well as the iNaturalist app to record their sightings, and everyone who is interested is asked to sign up ahead of time.
This two-hour outing will give participants an opportunity to brush up on their bird identification skills, and while everyone is reminded to bring along a pair of binoculars, there will be some pairs on hand for anyone who does not have them. The data collected will be submitted to Audubon and used to track migration and population patterns.
Becoming a citizen scientist gives people a way to do a good turn for nature, and have fun in the process. Presenting kids who take part in these sorts of activities with certificates that recognize their contributions can encourage them to keep on learning, and these may be sourced from local Stationery printers.
The Wingfield Pines Conservation Area will be welcoming a visit from Pittsburgh birders on Saturday, December 18. Tickets to get involved start at $5 each.
