Pittsburgh program helps migrating birds

The fall migration is here, and as Pittsburgh sits on a major flyway, its residents have been asked to take a simple step that will offer some help to birds.

Millions of birds are on the move, and Pittsburgh's National Aviary has asked everyone to consider joining the “lights out” movement. Running until the middle of November, and it will benefit both feathered friends and people’s household budgets.

The organizers of Lights Out Pittsburgh are asking residents to turn off any unnecessary interior and exterior lighting from midnight until 6:00 am for a few months. Millions of birds fly over the city and the surrounding areas at night, and reducing the artificial lights can help keep them oriented and prevent window strikes. There are environmental and economic advantages too, as it may also lower energy consumption and power bills.

To assist the organizers of the movement and also provide funding, several local organizations and businesses have signed up as community partners. A poster printing company can supply an assortment of materials to spread the word about a nature-focused campaign, as well as information with Promotional Products such as stickers to help stop window strikes.

The Lights Out Pittsburgh program is already underway and runs until November 15. It will start again in the spring on March 15. More information is available on the Aviary’s website.
