Pittsburgh prepares to polka at Polishfest

The University of Pittsburgh is hosting a Polishfest for anyone looking to experience another culture. The event will be a festivity of dancing, food, and art.

The theme of the festival centers on a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the campus’ Lithuanian and Polish rooms. As such, it will involve some Lithuanian events, including the Echoes of Lithuanian Radio Program with Bill Barcousky and Bill Kolicius, egg painting with noted egg decorator Christine Luschas, and the Bociai Lithuanian Folk Group.

Plenty of events will honor a Polish heritage. Radislow Fizek will be playing folk songs and traditional Polish dances will be performed by the Polish Dance Ensemble of McKeesport, Pennsylvania and the Living Traditions Folk Dance Ensemble. There will also be a Polish gift and import market, a children’s crafts section, and a Polish bakery serving a number of traditional breads and food from the European country. The event will also have a time when visitors can learn to dance the polka.

The Polishfest will be held on November 8 from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh at 4200 Fifth Avenue. Admission is free to the public, though there will be a charge for concessions and some crafting materials. All proceeds benefit the Nationality Room Scholarship Fund. Anyone interested should check the Flyers in the area or the website.
