Pittsburgh invited to learn about pressure canning

Canning and other ways of preserving perishable foods has been practiced for centuries, and a Pittsburgh workshop will help bring this practice into the modern age.

Grow Pittsburgh is set to offer a pressure canning workshop that will provide an introduction for those who would like to get started. Taking place in the evening, the registration fee for the event is $10.

The session will explore how pressure canning has become a much safer process in recent years thanks to improved technology. They will find out how it is the only safe method for preserving foods that have a low acid content, such as meats, stocks, and vegetables. They will learn how to decide whether to use a water bath or pressure canner to preserve a particular foodstuff, and basic safety guidelines will be reviewed. Everyone will walk away with plenty of information as well as tips for finding recipes.

Knowing how to preserve foods for future use can be fun, thrifty, and also sustainable. Basic tip guides and other handouts, as well as Copies of recipes and jar labels, can be prepared for a learning session by a printing services company.

This instruction to the use of a modern pressure canner will begin at 6:00 pm on Thursday, June 6. Braddock Farms will be the venue for the event.
