Pittsburgh hike to harness humor's healing power

A Pittsburgh activity may help to shoulder their burden some veterans carry long after their military life.

The city will be welcoming the Irreverent Warriors Silkies Hike, which harnesses the power of humor and friendship to promote good mental health. The activity is intended for veterans as well as reservists and active duty military personnel, and while the general public will not be able to participate, they are invited to sign on as a volunteer.

Those who plan on joining the hike are invited to wear their silkies if they wish, but they are not required. Sunblock and hats are recommended, and everyone will need to supply a photo ID. The hike is not intended to be an athletic event and only documented service animals may take part.

The organizers of the event explained that to help raise funds and also increase public awareness of the impact post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may have on the mental health of veterans, several Promotional Products printed with an Irreverent Warriors graphic design are available for purchase. These can be ordered through the group’s website.

The Irreverent Warriors Silkies Hike will be held on Saturday, May 18 at the Acrisure Stadium, and it will begin at 8:00 am. More details and a chance to register can both be found on its online event listing.
