Tualatin to build first veterans memorial

The first memorial for veterans in the city is to be erected at Tualatin Commons.

After recommendations from staff at city hall and many meetings with local groups of stakeholder, a landscaped spot has been selected by City Council, which is across from the main plaza of the Lake at the Commons and just a few feet west of Lee’s Kitchen. Residents of Tigard will want to visit this memorial once it is completed. Flyer printing can be used to be sent to residents and those in surrounding communities to keep them abreast of the progress of such a project.

The director of the Tualatin Parks and Recreation Department, Ross Hoover, said that the final design of the memorial will be dependent on the recommendations from the community. He did say that there will be improvements in access to the space, as it is intended for the community and is the city’s response to honoring those who sacrificed and served for this country.

The community is looking to honor all members of the military and their families, and focus on peace and freedom in the memorial. Other themes the community wants to see expressed in the memorial are shared values, engagement, connection, and a sense of timelessness.

Costs for the design, construction drawings, permits, and other expenses associated with the building of the memorial are estimated to be a little over $208,000.
