Tigard to propose new charter for voters

The city of Tigard has been working to update its charter and is getting ready to present it to the residents of the city.

A Charter Review Committee consisting of 14 people studied state and local laws, city charters from around the state, and other resources to propose these updates. The community was also involved in the process to review the current charter and provide its input.

It was recommended that much of the foundation of the city government should remain the same, such as the form of government, how officials are elected, and how laws are passed. The proposed changes include adding two more people to the City Council, thereby increasing the number of people on the Council to seven. This number includes the mayor and six councilors.

There will also be changes related to the Council itself. The term of the Council president will be reduced from two years to one, and the requirement that a member of the Council must resign to run for mayor will be eliminated. A requirement will be added that promotes elected officials who are dedicated to the community of Tigard.

Local Print shops can participate in spreading the word about such proposed updates with Flyers and other printed materials.

Voters will be asked to approve these changes in a special election in May.
