Tigard to convert hotel into a shelter for the homeless

The City Council of Tigard has voted to convert the Quality Inn on 68th Parkway and Southwest Pacific Highway into a homeless shelter.

The hotel is next to the Tigard Triangle and a Mongolian barbeque restaurant. Interstate 5, Highway 99W, and Highway 217 surround the area of the hotel.

Project Turnkey, a program of the state of Oregon, will make this possible, as it is a program that acquires and converts hotels and motels into shelters for those experiencing homelessness. Families who are struggling will be able to stay in the hotel for a few months as they endeavor to make ends meet. Local Print shops can be hired so that such families in need can become aware of where they can seek shelter for a period of time.

Program manager for the City of Tigard, Kim Ezell, said that this demonstrates the commitment of the city to reducing homelessness. Ezell said that some families have already moved into the Quality Inn, which will accommodate about 70 families.

Ezell said the cost to acquire the hotel is $12m, $10 of which will come from Project Turnkey, $1.5m from funding from Washington County Supportive Housing Services, and another $1m from the Tigard Community Development Agency. Family Promise of Tualatin Valley, a non-profit organization, will be managing the shelter.
