Tigard police inform community of new traffic equipment

Photo equipment to enforce traffic rules and regulations will be installed at three intersections along Pacific Highway in Tigard as a way to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists.

Police Chief Kathy McAlpine and police administrators of Tigard explained to members of the audience at the chief’s regular gatherings at Tigard City Hall that hardware and cameras would be installed where the highway intersects with Durham Road, Hall Boulevard, and 72nd Avenue. This equipment could be installed as early as this month as it waits approval from the Oregon Department of Transportation.

McAlpine reassured the crowd that these new cameras were designed to help with revenues for the city but for safety reasons. As a response to a question asked by a member of the audience about the experiences of other cities with similar equipment, McAlpine said many have seen double-digit reductions in fatalities, accidents, and injuries in such neighboring cities and towns as Beaverton, Tualatin, Sherwood, and Portland. Print shops can be used for such meetings to Print traffic and safety statistics in neighboring communities.

A police traffic enforcement team supervisor from Tigard, Lt. Neil Charlton, said the first installation will be at the Hall Boulevard intersection, followed by Durham Road and then 72nd Avenue. Warnings of traffic violations will be given out for the first 30 days.
