Tigard organization receives communication award

The Lake Oswego Tigard Water Partnership has been named as the recipient of an award that recognizes its efforts to effectively communicate an idea to the public.

The City-county Communications & Marketing Association (3CMA) selected the organization to be the winner of its Savvy Award because of a video the Partnership made about its use of horizontal directional drilling to place 3,900 feet of piping to carry water under the Willamette River.

The prize was presented during a 3CMA conference that was recently held in Atlanta. The Savvy Award recognizes superior efforts in facilitating effective communication between a government and the citizens.

The director of the project, Joel Komarek, noted that everyone involved is pleased and proud to have the efforts recognized. A company that creates Promotional Products can produce items that help to further get the word out to the public about the tunnel and how it helped to protect the environment.

The video outlines the work that was done during the three-month project that saw the pipe laid without impacting the salmon that depend upon the river for spawning. Kormarek reported that the plan was especially complex due to the fact that the tunnel through which the piping was run is longer than most, as well as the geology of the area, and that both the points for entry and exit were in areas that are environmentally sensitive.
