Agilyx Corporation in Tigard recently announced that it has developed an advanced method of recycling plastics such as Styrofoam. This method converts such plastics into an oil, which goes through a process to refine it to make other types of plastics.
Vice president of the company, Brian Moe, added that this form of recycling is “the next kind of stage.” He said there will still be a place for previous Forms of recycling, but this new process will enable more material to be reused.
As part of the announcement, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the plant in Tigard. Partners of Agilyx in this endeavor include local government such as Washington County and the Tigard City Council and industry representatives from Americas Styrenics LLC and American Chemistry Council, all of whom attended the special ceremony.
Moe added that this plant is the first recycling of polystyrene to styrene oil of a commercial nature in the world. It is expected that when fully operational, up to 10 tons of polystyrene waste a day will be able to be produce styrene oil that can be used to create new polystyrene such as plastic utensils, plates, and cups.
