Students enter budget challenge at Tigard high school

Students at Tigard High School recently had guests from Black Rock attend their eighth-block Wealth Management class and shared their insights about the nature of small businesses.

The school takes part in the H&R Block Budget Challenge. This is a program that lasts 10 weeks and teaches teenagers skills in money management. A real-life challenge is simulated in that the teenagers are given paychecks, and then they learn about making financial decisions in the real world. Those students who participate can earn scholarships and other prizes and they also can compare themselves with other students across the country.

Merchandise and a package of gift cards was given to the winner of the challenge by Black Rock, which also provided drinks for the entire class. The winner in the eighth block was Teija Atkinson.

The Wealth Management class is offered by Sue Suttich, a business teacher, who has been offering the challenge for the past four years. She felt it was important as it put into practice the concepts the students have learned in class. She added that Black Rock has played a vital role in motivating students and helping out with the course.
