Plaza in Tigard to be revitalized

The two phases of Universal Plaza have been designed on Southwest Burnham Street over 1.8 acres in Tigard.

The community engagement coordinator for Tigard, Lauren Scott, said that the first phase will have a splash pad and interactive water feature, which is the amenity most requested by the community. Scott said the second phase will have a shelter for the winter and an overhead canopy for shade in the summer. When completed, the plaza will be an accessible and walkable space for everyone. Local Print shops are often hired to create Flyers and other materials with more details about such projects.

The cost for the first phase is expected to be around $3.5m, although these costs may be refined by the construction manager/general contractor undertaking the project. The urban renewal plan amendment, which was passed recently, will cover the costs for the second phase.

Scott said that the design of the project was conducted by community input from 60 advisors representing many different aspects of the Tigard community who provided their input on the many design elements. A firm based in Los Angeles, RIOS, has been overseeing the design of the project.

Construction on the first phase is expected to begin this upcoming winter and to be completed by late summer or early fall of 2022. There is currently no timeline for construction of the second phase.
