New senior center and housing comes to Tigard

Ground has been broken on the Tigard Senior Center, which is being developed by the city of Tigard and Northwest Housing Alternatives (NHA).

This project will offer affordable housing for senior citizens in the downtown area. It will consist of a building four stories high, with 57 one-bedroom apartments that will be affordable for low-income seniors and will be fully accessible with walk-in showers. SERA Architects and Walsh Construction are working together on the project.

The project will also have a lobby with a fireplace, resident and manager services offices, meeting spaces, a teaching kitchen, a community room, and an easy pick-up and drop-off space for activities for seniors. Such special features are often highlighted in brochure printing to promote such new projects to seniors in the community.

Executive Director of the NHA, Trell Anderson, said that a senior center combined with affordable housing for seniors is the best of all worlds that demonstrates supportive programming. He expressed his gratitude to the construction and design team and all those funding the project who are enabling it to move forward. He also expressed his thanks to the staff of the city of Tigard, and the mayor, who envisioned this project and maintained that vision through the entire process.

Among the funding entities for the project are the Energy Trust of Oregon, Oregon Housing and Community Services, and Washington County.
