Inaugural civics bee held in Tigard
For the first time the Tigard Civics bee was held in Tigard at Twality Middle School sponsored by the Tigard Area Chamber of Commerce.
News of such special events is often spread throughout a community with flyer printing.
The Civics Bee gathered young people from around the area to see how well they understood the process of democracy, government, and civics. Representative and House Majority Leader Ben Bowman was the emcee for the event and the panel of judges included Nina Carlson of NW Natural, Becky Tymchuk Board Chair of the NW Regional Education Service District, and Heidi Lueb, mayor of Tigard.
The Civics Bee is part of an initiative across the country aiming to help inspire middle school students in becoming informed and active citizens. Topics at the Bee included local government, the three government branches, and the United States Constitution.
CEO of the Tigard Area Chamber of Commerce, Megan De Salvo, expressed her thrill at seeing all these students being so passionate about civies and their role in shaping the community.
The first three winners of the event were all from Riverdale Grade School: Yervant Wei, Emeryn Tibbs, and Athanasia Gatziolis. In fourth and fifth place were Alexis Milla, also from Riverdale Grade School, and Lake Oswego Middle School’s Avery Neice. The five will represent the Portland metropolitan area at the State Civics Bee later this year.
