Electric company starts construction on operations center

Construction on a major new integrated operations center for Portland General Electric (PGE) has begun in Tualatin. This center will be resilient to natural and manmade disasters and improve the daily operations of the company and its employees. Residents of Tigard may be interested in working in such a facility once it opens.

The center is along the southeast corner of the 124th Avenue extension and Tualatin-Sherwood Road on a parcel of land 43 acres in size. The facility will be 108,000 square feet and house between 250 to 350 employees. There will be a utility yard 12,700 square feet in size with landscaping or a wall to enclose it as well as a helicopter landing pad that will be used for inspecting and patrolling lines and by the biologists at the company.

Steve Corson, a spokesperson for PGE, said that the building will be able to withstand an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0 that is expected to hit the coast of Oregon sometime in the future. The building would remain mostly intact after such a disaster and cause little disruption to its operations. Printing services can be used to provide the community with more details about such buildings.

The center will also manage the renewal energy grid of the company and not replace its administrative headquarters in Portland at the World Trade Center.
