Downtown Portland’s Meier & Frank Building was recently the site for a grand opening of Oregon State University’s OSU Portland Center.
The OSU Center here occupies the second floor of one of Portland’s historic buildings. An OSU release revealed that the 40,000-square-foot area will serve as a base for OSU’s expanded local academic offerings, as well as an event and office space. Oregon State University will have its Extension Service as well as OSU Athletics, OSU Alumni Association, the University’s partnership and commercial initiative with private industry, OSU Advantage, and the OSU Foundation here.
Next door to the Pioneer Courthouse Square, the Meier & Frank Building was constructed in 1909. At one time the building was the location of the department store Meier & Frank and later Macy’s, which closed in 2017. The 15-story building has an 11,000-square-foot store on the ground floor that since November been home to MUJI, a Japanese retailer. Floors 6th through 15th are occupied by The Nines Hotel.
The celebration held by the latest occupant to use the 621 SW 5th Ave. address on their Business Cards and Letterheads took place on Monday, January 14 and included OSU cheerleaders, Benny Beaver, and other school supporters. Cookies were provided and the bronze beaver statues on the Pioneer Courthouse Square were decked out in OSU clothes for the day.
