In January, the owners of Broadway Books were contacted by Crown Publishing Group asking if they could arrange for an author to chat with a local book club. The author turned out to be none other than former First Lady Michelle Obama.
The owners Sally McPherson and Kim Bissell were asked to make arrangements with an established book club that Obama could meet with in Portland during her ‘Becoming’ tour. Originally scheduled for February 9, the sold-out appearance at the Moda Center, as well as her meeting with the book club, were rescheduled due to a winter storm warning.
Banner printing is one of the promotional methods used to announce the appearance of a celebrity, or an upcoming event, although other means of spreading the word can prove necessary when the special date has to be rescheduled at the last minute.
On March 19, the former First Lady had the opportunity to chat with a book club comprising 14 young women from diverse backgrounds. The club, which came together in 2015, had chosen “Becoming” to read for January. Following her time with the book club, Obama spoke at the Moda Center as part of the tour to promote her book.
“Becoming”, which is Obama’s memoir, was released in November, 2018 and became one of the top Books of last year. The book retained the top position among Amazon’s best sellers until mid-February.
