What's Happening in Portland, OR…

Black History Month pop-up in Portlands Old Town

Throughout the month of February, 10 am to 4 pm Wednesday through Sunday, a special celebration of Black culture will take place at a local venue in the form of Black history and culture exhibits.

The Horizon Enterprise Building is located in Old Town Portland, an area of the city that has long been a significant location for Portland’s Black community ever since African-American families began arriving in the late 1800 due to railroad activity here.

The 120-year-old building was purchased in 2021 by Adewale Agboola and Cyrus Coleman. The co-owners, going by the name Creative Homies, envision the building becoming a creative space for everyone, particularly communities of color.

Banner printing services work well for those wishing to advertising events as well as those starting new enterprises.

Tory Campbell, interim director for event organizer 1803 Fund, said:
“We call it our Black-Black History Month. We have the opportunity to work with Creative Homies in this building, who are two Black developers.”

The event will be the first one for Agboola and Coleman at the Horizon Enterprise Building. Future plans for the building include, according to Coleman, a basement Jazz Bar Vibe, with a galley space, speakeasy, café, production studio, and a maker’s space.

The February celebration of Black culture will extend over three floors of the Horizon Enterprise Building and will be free to the public.
