Since the Toledo Zoo and Aquarium is closed to visitors for an unspecified time, it has gone onto Facebook with videos, posts, weekly summer kids’ club, virtual trivia, zoo arts and crafts, Zoo Storytime, Meals-on-the-Go, and yoga.
Videos follow the antics of some of the zoo’s most popular animals, such as the lemurs and Kwisha, the zoo’s silverback gorilla.
Educational classes for children and families on Zoom include topics like birds, mammals, zoo careers, endangered species, and adaptations. Virtual zoo tours are also online; these include visits to venom and mammal exhibits and discussions about endangered species, prehistoric Ohio, and pollinators. Adult programs include Animal Training at Home, and Namaste for Nature.
Beginning on June 1 and going until August 14th on Zoom, kids can go to virtual camp Mondays through Saturdays watching zoo videos, enjoying virtual interactions with staff, and taking part in activities. The younger children can watch Animal Superheroes while older ones 11 years old and older will be introduced to Zoo Careers. Weekly email packets will be sent with home activities, a list of supplies, and the schedule.
The zoo is raising funds through online animal created painting auctions, and Zoo Pal adoptions. Its meals-on-the-go program offers two entrée options each week for a family of four. The price is $40 and orders can be placed online.
Patrons can go to the zoo’s Redbubble Gift Shop and purchase items such as classic T-Shirts sporting a colorful Toledo Zoo graphic design.
