Stow seeks grant to help firefighters

On November 19, members of the Stow City Council voted unanimously to approve an ordinance that would allow the city to accept a grant from the Department of Homeland Security.

The DHS Security Assistance to Firefighters Program grant would give Stow enough money to cover about 90% of the cost of replacing breathing equipment firefighters use.

Paul Amonett, a captain with the Stow Fire Department, said the new equipment would be a “huge benefit for the fire department”. Stow's mayor, Sara Drew, said she was hoping the city would receive the funding, adding that Stow has a lot of success in receiving grants.

Amonett also said the application for the grant for fiscal year 2015 is almost ready for submission, and that the money will be awarded in spring or early summer of 2016. He added the city is actively working on this to make sure everything is ready.

Amonett said the money would be used to replace all of the department's equipment, which is approximately 15 years old, an age at which it should be replaced. The current equipment is not up to date with safety features either, and that should be addressed. Since these issues are vital to keeping firefighters safe, Amonett believes there is a good chance Stow will receive the money it needs.
