Stow resident wins play-writing contest

Brandi Eaton, from Stow, won Weathervane Playhouse’s 8X10TheatreFest recently.

This was the fourth annual contest held by the Akron theater, and Eaton’s entry, ‘A Telegram in the World of Smartphones’, took top honors.

A total of 150 works were submitted, and out of these eight finalists were chosen. The eight were then performed at Weathervane during the period July 11th-13th, with audience members asked to vote for their three favorite productions.

Aaron McDavis, a resident of Rowlet, Texas, took second with his play ‘The Psycho’s Path’, while Rebecca Gorman O’Neill, from Denver, walked off with third for her work, ‘You’ve Got the Wrong Dragon’.

Pat Robertell-Hudston and Bill Morgan directed Eaton’s play. Robertell-Hudson, who lives in Silver Lake, won the Weathervane contest the first year it took place. Actors Al Klesh, Kyla Williger, and Scott Keating Davis brought Eaton’s characters alive.

In addition to voting for the best plays, audience members were also asked to vote for the special prop they wanted to have included in all the plays submitted to the contest next year. They chose a vintage hand mirror; Weathervane will post details on its website later this year.

The fifth competition will take place July 10th-12th, 2015.

Weathervane management might consider working with brochure printers to create a mailer targeting Stow residents, describing the new season and using Eaton’s success to invite them to come to Akron for future productions.
