Stow mulls over a major change

In her state-of-the-city address on February 16, Sara Drew, the mayor of Stow, outlined projects to come in 2016, the most important being combining dispatch services with Cuyahoga Falls.

Cuyahoga Falls and Stow have been discussing the possibility of combining their dispatch services for several months, according to Drew. She said that in a crisis, it is imperative that the dispatcher can provide reassurance and assistance, and send the first responders to the person who needs their help.

At present, Stow handles calls for Mogadore, Tallmadge, and Randolph Township, and Cuyahoga Falls handles dispatch duties for Silver Lake and Munroe Falls. Drew says that the two communities have a strong working relationship, and that if Stow's dispatchers are overwhelmed, calls automatically go to Cuyahoga Falls' dispatchers.

About a decade ago, the two communities discussed forming a common dispatch center, but nothing came of it. Now, the issue has arisen again, as a way that will allow both communities to meet the needs of their residents, control costs, increase their level of service, and meet the mandates handed down to them by Ohio. They two entities are thinking of locating a regional dispatch center in an entirely new location, to allow room for expansion. Although there is more work to do, Mayor Drew is happy with the progress thus far.

Stow officials could create Brochures for the community, explaining why consolidating the services will be beneficial to everyone.
