Reconstruction project receives go ahead

The Free/Stine Group Reconstruction Project has recently been approved for construction by the Board of Miami County Commissioners.

Beginning at the U.S. Route 36 bridge the proposed project would involve an open ditch being dredged up to Fairview Road. A proposed subsurface drain would start at Fairview Road and flow northwest, crossing Snyder Road before turning back northeast and again crossing Fairview Road. It would end immediately south of Snodgrass Road on Fairview Road’s east side.

The assessment schedule was approved as presented to the commissioners by the Miami County Soil and Water Conservation District, which was to act as the project’s contracting agent and put the project up for public bid. The total projected project cost is $314,000 with construction estimated at $276,000, money set aside for contingencies at $22,000 and first-year maintenance cost of $14,000.

When it comes to accepting bids, municipalities hope to see a variety of Letterheads in response.

Some Piqua residents can probably vouch for a drainage problem in Springcreek Township within the watershed area of Fairview Road, U.S. Route 36 and Snyder Road. The staff report notes “excessive surface and subsurface water” in what is both a residential and agricultural area.

It has taken 18 months to get to this point; it was January 8, 2019 that the Miami County Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors accepted a petition concerning the drainage problems within the watershed area.
