With an eye toward encouraging greater civic engagement, strengthening communications, and engendering a positive relationship between city employees and the public, the Academy utilizes a number of interactive sessions designed to provide participants with a greater understanding of how the city of Piqua operates, including the decision-making processes, services offered, and how the various city departments collaborate to better meet the community’s needs.
The use of brochure and flyer printing services are among the methods government agencies sometimes use to keep the public informed of their programs and activities.
Rick Byron, Piqua’s interim city manager, explained the reason for bringing back the Academy after a hiatus of a few years, saying:
“An informed and engaged community is essential to effective local government. By giving residents a closer look at how decisions are made and services are delivered, we hope to encourage greater civic participation and inspire future community leaders.”
A free program, the Piqua Government Academy is available to anyone residing within the city limits who is at least 18 years of age. Acceptance of eligible applicants is on a first come, first served basis and will begin on September 14, continuing for a total of eight weeks every Monday night from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
