Piqua Fire Department swears in new chief

The City of Piqua starts off April with a new chief, Lee Adams, heading its fire department.

Adams, with 22 years of firefighting and emergency medical services under his belt, was sworn in on March 28. The new chief has spent 18 years of his firefighting career here in Piqua, serving since 2016 as the assistant fire chief.

The position of chief has been vacant since Chief Brent Pohlschneider retired in December 2023 and the reviewing of candidates to fill the position has been ongoing by the Piqua Civil Service Commission. Adams, a lifelong Piqua resident, has been serving as interim chief since February for the 33-member department.

Print shops have a role to play in advertising for candidates to fill an open position in city government.

The newly sworn in Chief Adams was quoted as saying:

“I am looking forward to working with the men and women of the Piqua Fire Department as the organization continues to grow and approaches 150 years of continuous service to the community.”

Specific rules and regulations are in place for the fire chief selection process. A panel of five was appointed by the city’s Civil Service Commission to conduct the interview process, which included internal candidates. The panel comprised the human resources director, two members of the community, the safety services director and the city manager.
