Sophomores and juniors, whose families are members of an electric cooperative, are invited by Pioneer Electric to apply for a leadership program in the nation’s capital, known as Ohio’s Electric Cooperative Youth Tour.
It has been almost a decade since Pioneer Electric has sponsored the all-expenses-paid trip to Washington D.C. The cooperative serves over 16,700 members that are spread throughout nine counties, one of which will be of particular interest to Piqua residents – Miami County.
One or two students in the area and about 40 other Ohio delegates will join over 1,800 students from around the U.S. in the nation’s capital. The focus of the trip will be for the students to learn about public service and government, plus the cooperative business model. The high school delegates will also have the chance to meet Ohio’s congressional delegation.
When yearbook layouts are sent to Print shops, the students chosen for the Youth Tour will likely have earned one more appearance.
Time will be set aside for sightseeing and among the spots toured will be the U.S. Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial, as well as the World War II, Korean, and Vietnam memorials. Other stops will be the Gettysburg battlefield, Smithsonian Museums of Natural History and American History, and the first U.S. president’s beloved estate, Mount Vernon.
The deadline for applying for the Youth Tour is December 20, 2019. The Tour will take place June 19 to 25, 2020.
