MVVM to host Civil War historian

Piqua history buffs may wish to drop by the Miami Valley Veterans Museum (MVVM) on this upcoming Pearl Harbor Day to hear Rex Maggert, Civil War historian, talk on the “The Daily Life of a Civil War Soldier”.

Maggert, with the help of two diaries, will give attendees a first-hand account of what everyday life was like for a Civil War private. Additionally, he will share original letters that Patrick Atkinson of the 22nd Michigan regiment sent to his wife.

While gathered around Tim Horton coffee and donuts, attendees can listen to two soldiers’ take on the war. The diaries were the property of Charles Smith and Charles Grosvenor. Smith was part of the 32nd Ohio infantry regiment originating in Delaware County, while Grosvenor, from Troy, was in the 147th infantry regiment.

Clubs and other organizations often utilize poster printing services to spread the word about upcoming events they are holding.

Maggert’s interest in the “War between the States” was first piqued upon the discovery of a Civil War veteran in his family tree. From there he began doing research and then began to take part in re-enactments which led to talks on the Civil War and more.

The lecture will include slides of sketches made by the soldiers that he will show on the MVVM’s widescreen.

The Daily Life of a Civil War Soldier will take place at 9:00 am on Pearl Harbor Day, December 7.
