Edison State awarded grants for EMS training equipment

Last month, the emergency medical services (EMS) department of Piqua-based Edison State Community College received three grants provided to it for the purpose of buying a virtual reality (VR) training program.

The VR training equipment will be paid for by a General Fund of the Troy Foundation grant of $4,525, a second grant of the same amount from the Miami County Foundation, and $1,000 from The Edison Foundation. Students studying for critical healthcare careers will have Goggle headsets to enable them to participate in training simulation. Additionally, students can log in from their computer and work on training material wherever they are.

Local printing services provide post-secondary education institutions with a variety of materials, including various types of signage.

The department, which had been using mannequins and props, will now be able to provide more realistic training in patient assessment and treatment for students in the school’s Paramedic and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) programs. The new VR training equipment will become part of the Paramedic Certification program beginning in the 2024 spring semester. By the end of the year, it is expected to become part of the EMT Short-term Technical Certification program.

The Paramedic and EMT programs are offered by Edison State exclusively through its Troy campus, which opened in 2019 and serves as a vital educational resource for the Upper Miami Valley’s growing healthcare industry.
