What's Happening in Piqua, OH…

Abandoned YMCA building scheduled for demolition in Piqua

Beginning in February and continuing on for about the next four months, the old Miami County YMCA building in Piqua will be undergoing demolition.

According to Jim McMaken, the executive director of the Miami County YMCA, the building’s interior has been in the process of demolition for the last three weeks. The old building’s footprint will be used as a parking lot for the current building’s YMCA membership.

Brochure printing services are used by religious, community, and civic organizations to distribute information to their membership.

Estimates, according to Miami County YMCA, are that by summertime the demolition will be complete, and the new parking lot ready for use.

McMaken explained that funding for the new parking lot was obtained in part by donations from 540 businesses and individuals. In October, Miami County was provided with $2 million for the purpose of removing vacant businesses, and the old YMCA building was included on the county’s list for demolition.

For 132 years, downtown Piqua has had a YMCA location. The city’s association with the organization began in 1892 when the original Piqua branch of the organization was constructed on the corner of High and Downing streets. That location was replaced in 1962 by a new building, which is the one about to be torn down after closing near the end of July 2024.

The current YMCA building here opened on August 5 across the street from the old one.
