Rather than constructing a new dome, Director Vannello is now planning on repairing the city’s 5,500-ton main salt dome at Chevrolet Boulevard. He explained:
“We were looking at creating possibly some redundancy with this grant, to create a third dome, but we shifted gears because of the cost. The service garage dome had been repaired a number of times over the years, but a complete rebuild for another dome was north of $300,000. That was just too much money.”
A third dome was desire not so much to avoid shortages but to ensure the quicker more efficient distribution of salt. The city is still looking to add a third dome to the city’s 5,500- and 500-ton domes and will continue to search for other funding sources.
Local Print shops supply the quality printing needed to apply for grants.
As an alternative to the high cost of a rebuild, Parma will be using a Sodium Chloride Reduction Grant in the amount of $75,000 from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to have Celina Tent LLC use a new polyethylene skin to repair the service garage dome as well as update the truss anchors.
Work on the dome is anticipated to commence in October and finish in November.
