Parma City Schools willing to switch property tax for income tax

The Parma City School District, for the first time ever, is agreeable to eliminating property tax levies if an earned income tax of 1.75% is approved by voters. A meeting on the matter will take place later this month.

Last month, a resolution was passed by the Parma district school board to cease collecting on its three property tax levies as of January 2028, if the income tax passes. In that event, expiration of the property tax levies would take place in 2030, 2031, and 2034. On average, homeowners in Parma, Seven Hills and Parma Heights would save $500 a year with the elimination of the levies.

Municipalities often use brochure printing services to help them educate the public on ballot issues.

The 1.75% earned income tax is expected to collect $50.3m, while the three property levies would only bring in $40.5m. As Superintendent Scott Hunt of Parma City Schools explained to News 5 that although the net increase may not sound huge, it is hoped that it will grow each year as people earn more.

If passed, the earned income tax will start in January 2027 and will apply only to salaries, wages, and self-employment income.

A meeting is scheduled for 6:00 pm on Tuesday, April 28 to provide information on the income tax levy proposal at Valley Forge High School.
