In its ongoing efforts to tackle flooding issues, the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) has recently announced that $11m will be spent in Parma on the Big Creek Restoration Project.
According to Jennifer Pilkey Elting, the Senior Manager of Community & Media Relations for NEORSD, the aim of the project is to make the creek more stable by protecting its infrastructure while lowering flooding risk. Local printing services offer a variety of methods for informing residents of public projects like this, such as creating leaflets.
The methods used on the project will be naturally restorative, such as utilizing boulders and logs to reshape the creek, creating a more stable, natural form. Included in the stream restoration of about 3,700 linear feet will be the stabilization of over 1,500 linear feet of creekbanks.
Funded by NEORSD’s Regional Stormwater Management Program, the Big Creek Restoration project is in its final design phase before a yearlong construction schedule commences in Spring 2028. Prior to construction starting, a number of other projects must be completed, among which is an abandoned gas well’s removal adjacent to the creek.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Orphan Well Program has scheduled addressing the Big Creek gas well in 2026, with the state covering the cost plus the mitigation of this and three other local wells.
