Parma schools enter partnership with FoodCorps

Recently, Parma City Schools announced that they would be partnering with FoodCorps in an effort to add value to its farm-to-school initiative.

The initiative is designed to increase access to fresh food grown locally to encourage healthier eating habits in students, in the hope that these habits will extend into adulthood.

Emily Gladish, the nutritional services supervisor for the Parma City School District, explained:
“FoodCorps does food education. Their mission aligns with ours in that we educate students and give them the tools that they need to live healthy lives.”

FoodCorps workers will be associated with the district’s nutritional education, taste tests, school gardens, and after-school cooking classes commencing with the 2025-2026 school year. Parma City Schools will be the second school district in Ohio to be partnered with FoodCorps.

Cities promote themselves and their schools with help from brochure printing services.

Two members will be sent by FoodCorps to work with the district’s food service team, with the company investing $75,000 per service member, and the school district being responsible for $15,000 per member in addition to a membership fee.

The school district’s farm-to-school efforts presently extends to outdoor gardens at Green Valley and Pleasant Valley elementary schools and composting taking place at Dentzler Elementary. Additionally, at a minimum, after-school cooking classes are conducted by the Nutrition Services Department once or twice during a school year at every Parma elementary school.
