The Center of Science and Industry (COSI) will be presenting Creatures of Light – Nature’s Bioluminescence in mid-October, allowing attendees to discover five exhibits.
The Meet the Fireflies exhibit will explore the insect’s system of flashes, and how it communicates through light.
Inspired by New Zealand, a Mysterious Cave experience will show a light show created by glowworms’ tails. They use this method to lure aquatic insects for food.
Another experience is the interactive A Sparkling Sea display based on a quiet lagoon in Mosquito Bay on Puerto Rico’s Vieques Island. A midnight phenomenon occurs here, where one-celled dinoflagellates flash on contact the night after bright sunny days.
Guests can also enjoy A Night Dive into an ocean containing corals that are dull during the day but glow at night. Meanwhile, other organisms like jellyfish turn neon green, orange, and pink as they absorb one color of light and emit a different color.
Finally, there is The Deep Ocean, where nothing sees the light of day, yet animals like anglerfish and deep-sea squid sparkle.
This experience was organized by New York’s American Museum of Natural History with the support from Chicago’s Field Museum and the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa, Canada.
