Grandview community theatre presents Dickens with a twist

Columbus Recreation and Parks Department has announced that the Grandview Carriage Place Players will soon be presenting a version of the holiday favorite Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’.

However, this musical will offer a somewhat distorted version of the classic, called ‘Steampunked Dickens Christmas Carol’.

In this show, three ghosts relate Scrooge’s Christmas adventure. The term Steampunk, as described by the play’s lyricist Liz Muller, is a combination of the Victorian Era, the Industrial Revolution, WW II, and some futurism. These elements are found in the props, sets, props and costumes.

For example, Marley is presented as a little animalistic, and the Ghosts of Christmas Future are seven post-apocalyptic looking dancers. Although Dickens’ original text has been used, some dialogue has been added. It is advised that children under five years old not attend due to the ghostly and potentially scary content.

Music for the show will be orchestral with a synthetic sound, not unlike the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

A few families here in Grandview Heights may want to mark their Calendars and go as a group to support our local talent. Shows are slated for December 9 and 10 at 7:00 pm, and a 2:00 pm performance on December 11 at the Shedd Theatre in the Columbus Performing Arts Center, 549 Franklin Avenue, Columbus. Admission will be $5.
