The Smashing Pumpkins first got together in Chicago in 1988, with guitarist Billy Corgan serving as frontman, along with drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, James Iha on guitar, and bassist D’arcy Wretzky. The band has broken up, gone through lineup changes, and still sold over 30 million records worldwide, making them a hugely successful group.
At the time the group was founded, punk rock was an influence on many other groups. The Pumpkins, however, went their own way, blending shoegaze, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, dream pop, heavy metal, and gothic rock, and later, electronica, into their own sound. Corgan is the main composer for the group, and it is his vision that has shaped the band’s album releases. The Pumpkins are often credited with helping to popularize alternative rock.
The popularity of grunge rock helped Smashing Pumpkins breakthrough into the mainstream, which they did in 1993 with “Siamese Dream.” The album, which made its debut at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 chart, also did well in the U.S. market, racking up more than four million Copies sold.
The band continues to rock, despite challenges. A review notes:

The Smashing Pumpkins are bringing their “The World Is A Vampire” Tour to the PNC Pavilion on September 5. Organizers who plan events like this can use poster printing to promote them.
